Good News for Good Friday: Dr. Mary J. Ruwart Announces Her Intention to Seek Libertarian Party Presidential Nomination
Research scientist, author, and ethicist, Dr. Mary J. Ruwart, today announced that she would seek the Libertarian Party’s presidential nomination. She is best known in the Libertarian Party circles for her libertarian primer, Healing Our World (2003 edition), which hit Amazon.com’s best-seller list in October 2005, reaching the #1 position in Amazon’s “Economic and Political Development” and “Practical Politics” categories.
Healing’s universal appeal is apparent from its prominent endorsers, including self-help notables Dr. Wayne Dyer and Harry Palmer; Nobel Peace Prize nominees, Frances Kendall and Leon Louw; world-renown nutritionist, Dr. Jonathan Wright; and Dr. Ron Paul, 1988 Libertarian Party presidential nominee and 2008 GOP presidential contender. Visions Magazine suggested that Healing “might be the most important book of the decade.” A free download of the 1993 version is available at www.ruwart.com.
Ruwart uses a wealth of historical examples to demonstrate that liberty eliminates poverty, protects the environment, deters crime, restores victims, penalizes discrimination, promotes peace, and encourages love of neighbor. Without ever using the word “rights,” Ruwart makes the moral and practical case for liberty compelling, not just to conservatives and rationalists, but to liberals, environmentalists, pragmatists, minorities, Christians, and those with a “New Age” orientation.
“Liberty benefits everyone, even those who think that they profit by today’s system,” Ruwart points out. “Our presidential nominee should be someone who can share the libertarian message with just about anyone in the space of a sound bite.”
Mary Ruwart knows a great deal about keeping her answers short, sweet, and compassionate. Her “Ask Dr. Ruwart” column (web address) has long been a mainstay of The Advocates’ “Liberator On Line” e-zine. Some of her attention-grabbing, snappy answers are featured at http://www.theadvocates.org/ruwart/categories_list.php. Others have become part of her popular book, Short Answers to the Tough Questions.
Dr. Ruwart is not just an arm-chair libertarian. She is the veteran of almost a dozen local races, including a 1990 run for Michigan’s State Board of Education, in which she became one of the first Libertarian candidates to be formally endorsed by a major newspaper (The Detroit News) in a partisan race. She has made major media appearances, including Larry King Radio and the Morton Downey, Jr. Show, discussing such sensitive libertarian issues as her sister’s assisted suicide with Dr. Jack Kevorkian.
When Hilary Clinton tried to introduce socialized medicine in the 1990s, Dr. Ruwart and Jarret Wollstein, coauthored a Special Report, “Lethal Compassion: Why Government Medicine Is the Cure that Kills.” Together, Wollstein and Ruwart fielded questions on over 100 radio shows, contributing to the libertarian campaign that discredited the proposal.
Ruwart believes that health care is likely to be a major issue in the 2008 campaign, along with government spending, the War in Iraq, and the economy. With her background in the pharmaceutical sciences, nutrition, and health care, Dr. Ruwart knows first-hand how excessive regulations are strangling innovative, inexpensive medical breakthroughs. “We could be enjoying a Golden Age of health today and unsurpassed longevity without the government interference that started in the 1950s,” she states. “Medicine would be prevention-based and would cost less than 20% of what it does today.” Dr. Ruwart supports Congressman Paul’s “Health Freedom Protection Act” (web link) as a step in the right direction. Some of her original research on this subject, “Deadly Secrets Behind Soaring Pharmaceutical Prices,” is available as a free download at www.VoteMary2008.com.
“Government interference in any part of the economy is always costly and often deadly,” Dr. Ruwart points out. “Studies show that the more government spends, the poorer a nation becomes. Every regulator destroys about 150 jobs each year! The good news is that any nation can jump-start its economy simply by cutting taxes, slashing spending, and trading freely with all nations.”
One of biggest expenditures in recent years is the War in Iraq. “The lives of our brave young men and women who have volunteered to protect us are being sacrificed in a Mid East Vietnam,” she laments. Ruwart wants to bring our troops home---from Iraq, Europe, Korea, and Japan. “My priority as Commander-in-Chief would be the protection of our nation’s shores,” Ruwart promises.
“The current administration tells us that the terrorists attacked on 9-11 because they were jealous of our freedoms. If that’s true, we’ve played right in to their hands with the Patriot Act and Military Commissions Act,” Dr. Ruwart explains. “These Acts have all but eliminated our Bill of Rights. We are no longer the land of the free, but the home of the slave.”
“We need to get our nation back on track. Only a president who understands the libertarian ideals that made this country great can do so. Big Brother-style taxes and regulations legalize the exploitation of one group for the benefit of another, creating division and sowing discord. Liberty, on the other hand, unites us in true equality, prosperity, and peace. Only Liberty can heal the rifts that divide and impoverish us.”

“Never doubt that a small group of committed, thoughtful citizens can change the world. Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” ---Margaret Mead, American anthropologist
